Evil Twin Theory: Why Irene Adler still counts (WARNING: Spoilers ahead)

So over the past 4 days I’ve seen a few people upset by Elementary’s plot twist Irene revelation. Their dissatisfaction seems to stem from believing that this plot twist destroys Irene as a character within Elementary canon by removing her existance. I am not going to say these people are wrong, all opinions and interpretations are valid, that’s the beauty of art. I simply wish to add my own take on Irene to the conversation in the hope that a few of you might appreciate it.

I will start by saying I’m miffed that she was Sherlock’s girlfriend. For some reason this idea that they were in love has become lodged in the mind of every Sherlock Holmes writer of the past 20 years and it is my pet hate of the Holmesian Universe, 1) Irene was in love with and married Godfrey Norton, 2) the 4th sentence of A Scandal in Bohemia is “It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler.” they weren’t in love! However, since this is something everybody gets wrong I’m willing to put up with it because it was done well.

But on to my main point. Irene and Moriarty are not the same person. Yes, yes, I know them being the same person is the entire point of the plot twist, but they aren’t.

They are two completely seperate characters, played by the same actress. Moriarty is Irene’s “Evil Twin”

Now this theory shows us just how good this show actually is, everything about Natalie changes to show the transition, from her clothing and hair, to the way she speaks, moves, hell, someone even mentioned how her make-up changes (Irene has strong lips, Moriarty goes for strong eyes), they do everything to differentiate the two women.

Now let me explain how this prevents Irene’s erasure:
Because they’re two seperate characters they have two seperate storylines; Moriarty isn’t introduced until after Irene’s departure, Irene does not reappear again once we meet Moriarty. There is no crossover between them.

Irene’s storyline is fairly true to canon:

She is harrassed by a man who holds a lot of power over her (Here Mr Stapleton replaces the King of Bohemia)
She achieves her aim of getting back to the man she loves (Slightly soured by the fact that it’s Sherlock, as addressed above)
Sherlock miscasts her as a villain but she gets him to admit he is wrong
She gets to walk away on her own terms with her pride intact and her full agency restored to her.

I can’t stress this next bit enough: Irene’s story ends when she leaves the safe house, exactly like it did in A Scandal in Bohemia. Once she walks out that door we never see Irene again.

The Next time Dormer appears she is Moriarty. There’s no doubt about it, Irene was soft and gentle, Moriarty is all sharp angles, she’s fucking predatory and it’s sexy as hell! And we play out the traditional Holmes/Moriarty gambit of two genius predators circling each other, trying to take out their great rival.

This is where it gets complicated: So the whole way through the episode Irene and Moriarty have been visually seperate, but in the penultimate scene, in the hospital room there is a slight blurring. This woman is styled like Irene but acts like Moriarty.

And now you’re side-eying me because I have italicized that last sentence two paragraphs ago that says we never see Irene again, and we don’t. But we do see the fall out from her actions. Sherlock can’t win because he’s in love with Irene, it is his relationship with Irene that stalls him, ergo Irene beats him without even being there. Irene wins. Moriarty does not.

I’d quickly like to sidetrack and say I do not believe Moriarty was in love with Sherlock, or at least she was, but not in a healthy way. This is very much an abusive relationship, when Sherlock doesn’t leave with her she breaks him down to a point where she believes she can control him, then tries to take him again. She doesn’t want a brilliant confident equal, she wants a clever pet to mold in her own image. This is important because when Moriarty goes to the hospital it’s not because her emotions got the better of her and she’s rushing to her beloved’s bedside, it’s because she’s won and she’s coming to collect her prize, thank you very much!

So yes, Sherlock’s love for Irene is what stops him from being able to win this one. Sherlock most certainly does not win. The writers do not let Irene beat Sherlock and then let Sherlock beat Moriarty, which I personally see as proof that they respect Irene’s importance as The Woman Who Wins.

They very neatly deal with the problem of having to beat Moriarty by giving the victory to Joan. Which then makes you realise that this has been a show with two overlapping narratives: Sherlock being derailed by Irene running alongside Joan beating Moriarty.

So there you have it, Irene and Moriarty are the Evil Twin trope (one good, one bad character played by same actor), Irene still wins and keeps her agency, and we prove that Sherlock really would be lost without his Boswell.
